Buyers are naturally asking how a phone that fits in a pocket can cost twice as much as a laptop. The answer comes down to new engineering, pricey raw materials, and the sheer cost of putting a folding screen into a tiny metal frame.

Building a hinge with over one hundred tiny metal parts

Folding a piece of glass is hard, but keeping it flat and supported is even harder. Apple built a brand new hinge for its iPhone Duo using more than 100 individual parts. This complex system controls how the phone opens and closes while supporting the center of the folding screen.

Stacking ten ultra-thin layers for a folding display

The main draw is the 7.6-inch inner screen. This is the largest display on any iPhone, and it is 50 percent bigger than the screen on an iPhone Ultra or Pro Max.

But this is not just one normal sheet of glass. The inner display stacks ten very thin layers, including wide-angle OLED panels and a custom polymer cover that is 40 percent stiffer than usual. Special glues let these layers slide against each other like the pages of a book when you close the device. This stops the screen from taking on the stress of the bend. Putting together this custom mix of parts costs a lot more than the single LCD or OLED panel you see in a standard MacBook.

Packing two batteries and a laptop chip in small spaces

When you shrink computer parts to fit in a pocket, the price jumps. The Duo runs on the A20 Pro chip. This 2nm processor offers more raw brainpower than many desktop computers.

Because the phone folds in half, there is no room for one big battery. Instead, it uses two separate batteries, placing one in each half of the phone. A complex power system forces these two batteries to work as a team. This setup gives you up to 31 hours of video playback on the large inner screen. Managing power this way requires advanced engineering that a MacBook Air doesn’t need, since laptops have plenty of room for one massive battery pack.

Pushing the limits with titanium frames and custom glass

Unlike a laptop, a phone gets dropped, tossed in bags, and splashed with water. The Duo has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, which is tough to achieve on a device with moving parts. The outer frame is made of aerospace-grade titanium, and the front cover uses Ceramic Shield 2 for heavy scratch resistance.

All these premium materials add up fast. While laptops use simple aluminum shells, a foldable phone requires a mix of titanium, custom folding glass, and tightly packed internal chips. That makes the final product a major investment.

The $1,999 price tag shows that this is a highly premium device meant for early buyers who want the most capable tech available. It packs the brain of a high-end computer and a massive folding screen into a pocket-sized body. Building something this dense and durable simply costs a lot of money right now. Until the manufacturing process gets cheaper over the next few years, folding phones will stay at the top of the pricing ladder.
