Safari in iOS 27 sorts your open tabs for you. Apple’s iOS 27 page describes automatic tab organization that groups tabs by topic, so a dozen pages about a trip, a purchase and a work project stop sitting in one long strip and land in clusters instead. It ships with the free iOS 27 update on Monday, September 14.
It is the second of two Safari features Apple calls out for this release, next to Notify Me for price changes and restocks. Here is what Apple has said about how the grouping works, how to use it once the update installs, and what to do if your tabs stay in a pile.
How automatic tab organization works
Apple’s description is a single line: Safari organizes tabs by topic automatically. That points to Safari reading the content of open pages and clustering related ones, rather than asking you to drag tabs into Tab Groups by hand as in earlier versions.

Apple has not published what counts as a topic, whether the groups are named, how many tabs it takes before Safari starts sorting, or whether the feature relies on Apple Intelligence. The iOS 27 page does not mark it as an Apple Intelligence feature, which suggests it runs on every iPhone 12 or later that takes the update, but Apple has not stated that outright.
How to use automatic tab organization in iOS 27
These steps follow Apple’s published description of the feature on its iOS 27 page. The exact button names and menu positions may shift when iOS 27 ships on September 14, so treat them as a guide rather than a script.
- Install iOS 27 from Settings, General, Software Update on or after September 14.
- Open Safari and tap the Tabs button at the bottom right to open the tab overview.
- Look for tabs clustered under topic headings rather than in one grid. Safari does the grouping automatically, so there is no switch to flip in the overview itself.
- Tap a group to see its tabs, then tap a tab to open it.
- To move a tab Safari has put in the wrong place, touch and hold it and drag it to another group, as you would with a manual Tab Group.
- If you prefer the old layout, check Settings, Apps, Safari for a tab organization option. Apple has not confirmed that a toggle exists, so this step may not apply.
Manual Tab Groups are not mentioned on Apple’s iOS 27 page, and Apple has not said whether the automatic topic groups replace them, sit alongside them or feed into them. Expect the release notes on September 14 to settle that.
Tab organization vs Notify Me vs Split View
Safari’s two new features address different problems, and on the iPhone Duo there is a third way to manage pages. The table separates them using Apple’s iOS 27 and Duo pages.

The iPhone Duo is the only iPhone in the lineup that runs two apps at once, and Apple’s own marketing image for it shows Safari beside the Siri app. On an iPhone 18 Pro, the topic groups are the way to keep research organized on a single screen.
If Safari does not group your tabs
- Confirm the version. Automatic tab organization is an iOS 27 feature and is not in iOS 26.
- Open more tabs. Apple has not said how many pages Safari needs before it forms a group, so a handful of unrelated tabs may stay ungrouped.
- Give it time. The grouping is automatic, and Apple has not said whether it happens immediately or after Safari has read the pages.
- Check Private Browsing. Apple has not said whether topic grouping applies to private tabs, so switch to a standard window to test it.
- Check the release notes on September 14 for any region or language limits Apple did not put on the iOS 27 page.
