iOS 27 arrives as a free update on Monday, September 14, for iPhone 11 and later, according to Apple’s iOS 27 page. Apple has not stated a release hour, but it usually ships iOS updates around 10 a.m. Pacific, which gives you the weekend to get an iPhone ready so the install goes through the first time.
Preparation comes down to four things: a current backup, enough free storage, a charged battery, and a few settings that decide whether the Apple Intelligence features show up. Here is the checklist, followed by what to do if the update stalls.
First, check your iPhone qualifies
Apple’s page sets the floor at iPhone 11 and later, and puts full Apple Intelligence, including the Siri AI beta, on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 or later. The table shows what each group gets on September 14.

How to prepare your iPhone for iOS 27
These steps follow Apple’s published description of iOS 27. The exact button names and menu positions may shift when iOS 27 ships on September 14, so treat them as a guide rather than a script.
- Back up to iCloud. Open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, iCloud Backup, and tap Back Up Now. Wait for the timestamp to update before you go further.
- Make a second backup on a Mac or PC if you have one. Connect the iPhone, open Finder or the Apple Devices app, choose Back Up Now and encrypt the backup so Health and password data are included.
- Free up storage. Open Settings, General, iPhone Storage and clear the largest items the list recommends. Apple has not published the download size of iOS 27, so leave several gigabytes clear.
- Charge to at least 50 percent, or leave the phone on a charger. iOS installs pause on a low battery.
- Join Wi-Fi. Large updates download faster and avoid cellular limits, and Apple has not said iOS 27 can install over cellular alone.
- Update your apps. Open the App Store, tap your profile and update everything, so apps ready for iOS 27 are in place before the system changes underneath them.
- Check the language. If you want the Siri AI beta on day one, set the iPhone to English in Settings, General, Language and Region.
- On September 14, open Settings, General, Software Update and tap Update Now when iOS 27 appears. Leave the phone on the charger until it restarts.
Settings to check after the update
- Settings, Apple Intelligence and Siri: confirm Apple Intelligence is on and look for the Siri AI beta option on a supported iPhone. Apple has previously staged on-device model downloads, so allow time.
- Settings, Notifications, Safari: allow alerts so the new Notify Me feature can tell you about price changes and restocks.
- Settings, Accessibility: the new VoiceOver image descriptions, auto-generated video subtitles and Magnifier tools live here.
- Home app: check your home hub is online before trying activity notifications or 4K recording.
- Camera: on a supported iPhone, look for Siri mode among the capture modes.
If the update does not appear or fails
If Software Update shows nothing on September 14, Apple’s servers may still be rolling the release out; check again later in the day rather than restoring the phone. If the install fails, the usual causes are storage and battery, which steps three and four cover.
If the phone is on the Apple Intelligence list but Siri AI does not show, check the language and region first, then look for a pending model download in Apple Intelligence and Siri settings. Apple has not said whether the beta reaches every eligible phone at the same moment.
