Apple names five accessibility features in iOS 27: richer VoiceOver descriptions of images, auto-generated subtitles for video with translation, new Magnifier tools, Accessibility Reader, and a Voice Control that understands described controls. All of them arrive with the free update on Monday, September 14.
The list is short, and the requirements behind it are not identical. iOS 27 itself installs on iPhone 11 and later plus iPhone SE (2nd generation and later), but one of the five is English only in four countries, at least one other depends on Apple Intelligence hardware, and Apple has not published a feature-by-feature device list. Here is what is on the record for each.

The five features Apple lists
VoiceOver, Apple’s screen reader, gets three named changes at once. Apple’s wording is richer descriptions of images, plus Live Recognition and Action button integration, and it has published no further detail on any of the three.

Automatic captioning is the largest change in practical terms. Apple says iOS 27 generates synced subtitles for any video you watch and can translate existing captions into other languages, which removes the dependency on whoever uploaded a clip having captioned it.
Magnifier, the app that turns the camera into a magnifying glass, gains tools Apple describes only as designed for low vision. Accessibility Reader produces summaries and translation on complex material. Voice Control lets you describe a control on screen rather than knowing the label a developer gave it.
Voice Control carries the one published limit
Apple has stated that the new Voice Control is English only, in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. That is the only region and language restriction Apple has attached to any item on the accessibility list, and it is worth knowing before September 14 if you rely on voice input in another language.
Improved Dictation sits next to it and is limited by hardware rather than geography. Apple says the new on-device dictation model runs on iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air, plus iPad models with M4 or later and Mac models with M3 or later that have at least 12GB of unified memory, and Apple Vision Pro with M5. Older iPhones keep the existing dictation, which Apple has not said is changing.
What runs on an iPhone 11, and what needs newer hardware

The gap in the middle row is the one that matters most. Apple Intelligence in iOS 27 covers 16 languages and is limited to iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 or later, so if a description or a summary is generated by a model rather than read from a caption track, an iPhone 11 will not produce the same result. Apple has not said which of the five features fall on which side of that line.
Three iOS 27 changes filed elsewhere that do similar work
- Liquid Glass now has a slider in Settings that runs from ultraclear to fully tinted, and Apple says the material itself has more uniform refraction and improved contrast, with sharper app icons. That is a legibility control available to every iPhone that can install iOS 27.
- Live Translation translates texts in Messages and displays live translated captions in FaceTime and phone calls. Apple lists it as available now rather than as an accessibility feature.
- Custom EQ lets you adjust the lows, mids and highs in AirPods settings, which is a hearing-comfort control Apple files under AirPods rather than under Accessibility.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a per-feature hardware list, so there is no way yet to tell which of the five need an Apple Intelligence iPhone. It has not described Live Recognition, named the new Magnifier tools, listed the languages the caption translation covers, or said whether Accessibility Reader summaries count against the daily usage limits Apple applies to server-based features such as Siri AI and Image Playground.
The regional picture is also incomplete. Siri AI is not initially available in the European Union on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS, and Apple has not said whether any accessibility feature routes through it and inherits that exclusion.
