Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro tech specs list dual eSIM with two lines active at once and eight or more profiles stored on the phone. In twelve countries and regions there is no SIM tray at all, so eSIM is the only way the phone connects: Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Two active lines is the part worth understanding before you set the phone up, because it is a capacity rather than a feature you switch on. What two active lines genuinely enables
Active means both lines are live at the same time, so both can be reached without you swapping anything. That covers four situations most people actually run into.

- A work number and a personal number on one phone. Both stay reachable, and neither has to live on a second handset in a drawer.
- A local plan abroad without giving up your own number. You add the travel line alongside the one you already have rather than replacing it, which matters when your bank sends codes to the number you left at home.
- Switching carriers without a gap. Because two lines can run at once, a new plan can be live while the old one is still working, so you are not offline between the two.
- Keeping an old number alive. The phone holds eight or more stored profiles, so a number you rarely use does not have to be the one active line.
There is a smaller, physical benefit too. With no tray there is nothing to prise open, nothing to lose on a hotel desk and no card to damage, and Apple’s own headline battery figure for the iPhone 18 Pro, up to 36 hours of video playback, is the rating for the eSIM-only model.

One iOS 27 feature is explicitly conditional as well. iPhone Handoff, which moves a call between devices, is described by Apple as carrier-dependent, and Apple has not published which carriers support it. The rest of the software timing is in our iOS 27 release date coverage.
Where the iPhone Duo goes further
The iPhone Duo has no SIM tray in any country. Apple’s tech specs say it is not compatible with physical SIM cards and that it is eSIM only worldwide, with dual eSIM and the same two-active, eight-or-more arrangement, and the press release names more than 500 supported carriers.

What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a carrier list for the iPhone 18 Pro, a stated maximum number of stored eSIM profiles, how data is handled when both lines are active, whether a second line can be added at setup, or a country-by-country breakdown of which iPhone 18 Pro models keep a SIM tray.
iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders open Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT, with the phone in stores on Friday, September 18 in more than 65 countries and regions and 20 more on Friday, September 25.
