iPhone Duo has two front cameras, and they are not equal. The outer display carries a 12MP Center Stage camera at f/2.2 with Retina Flash that records 4K Dolby Vision video, while the inner display uses an under-display FaceTime camera at f/1.8 that tops out at 1080p, according to Apple’s tech specs.
The practical rule is simple: close the phone for selfies and 4K video, open it for FaceTime and video calls on the big screen. Here is what Apple has published for each, how they compare with the iPhone 18 Pro’s single 18MP front camera, and what Apple has left out.

The outer camera: 12MP, f/2.2, 4K Dolby Vision
The outer camera is a conventional front camera. Apple’s tech specs list it as a 12MP Center Stage camera with an f/2.2 aperture and Retina Flash. It records 4K Dolby Vision video at 24, 25, 30 or 60 fps and supports Cinematic mode at 4K 30 fps.

Because it faces you when the phone is closed, this is the camera for standard selfies, 4K vlogging and quick video messages. It is also the camera that stays usable in the closed, phone-sized form, so most day-to-day front-camera shots will come from it.
The inner camera: under the display, f/1.8, 1080p
Open the phone and the second camera sits beneath the 7.6-inch folding display. Apple’s tech specs give it an f/1.8 aperture, wider than the outer camera’s f/2.2, and list video at 1080p at 30 or 60 fps with Center Stage for FaceTime. Apple has not published a megapixel figure for it.
Apple positions this camera for FaceTime and video calls when the phone is open, which is where the 7.6-inch, 1878 x 2670 pixel inner display and Split View are most useful. Apple does not list Cinematic mode, 4K recording or Retina Flash for it. We have a separate piece on what Apple says the under-display camera can and cannot do.
One thing the inner camera does not do is Face ID. iPhone Duo uses Touch ID in the side button for unlocking, open or closed, with support for multiple fingers and unlock with Apple Watch.
Which front camera to use for what
- Selfies: outer camera. It is the only one with a published 12MP resolution and Retina Flash.
- 4K video of yourself: outer camera. The inner camera stops at 1080p.
- Cinematic mode selfies: outer camera, at 4K 30 fps.
- FaceTime and video calls on the big screen: inner camera, which Apple lists with Center Stage for FaceTime.
- Low light: the inner camera has the wider f/1.8 aperture, but Apple has published no low-light claims for either camera.
There is also a third option for pictures of yourself. Apple’s product page describes Duo Preview, which shows a live preview on the outer display for the subject, so the rear 48MP Fusion Main and 48MP Ultra Wide cameras can be used while the person being photographed sees the frame. Against the iPhone 18 Pro, the Duo’s outer camera has fewer pixels (12MP vs 18MP) and a slightly smaller aperture (f/2.2 vs f/1.9). What Apple has not said
- The megapixel count of the under-display inner camera.
- Whether either front camera has autofocus.
- Any image-quality or low-light claim for the under-display camera versus a conventional one.
- Whether Retina Flash, Cinematic mode or 4K recording will come to the inner camera in software.
- Whether Center Stage on the inner camera works outside FaceTime, in third-party video apps.
