Apple’s iPhone Duo press release lists a custom vapor chamber alongside the A20 Pro, and claims 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. The reason a folding phone needs one is in the dimensions: opened out, the iPhone Duo is 5.2 mm thick across 164.6 mm by 117.8 mm, which leaves each half thinner than any iPhone Apple has shipped.
A 2-nanometer chip with a 7-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine produces heat wherever it is installed. What changes in a fold is where that heat can go, because the volume that would normally hold a heat spreader is shared with two displays, two battery cells and a hinge. What a vapor chamber is doing in there
A vapor chamber is a sealed, flat structure that moves heat away from the component producing it and spreads it across a much larger area, so the frame and the body can shed it instead of a single hot spot doing all the work. The point is not to make the chip cooler in an instant; it is to stop the temperature climbing far enough, fast enough, that the system has to slow down to protect itself.

That is why Apple’s figures here are sustained-performance figures rather than peak benchmark ones. The chip is the same A20 Pro in both new phones, with a 6-core CPU that Apple rates up to 20 percent faster than the A19 Pro and a 7-core GPU up to 40 percent faster, so the difference between a short burst and a long session is thermal, not silicon. Apple has not published the chamber’s size, its position inside the phone, its working fluid or whether it spans the hinge, and it has not said whether the Duo’s chamber is the same design as the one in the iPhone 18 Pro. Only the phrase “custom vapor chamber” appears in the release.
Why the fold makes it harder
- Each half is 5.2 mm thick when the phone is open, so there is less depth for any heat-spreading layer than in the 8.75 mm iPhone 18 Pro.
- The battery is split into two cells, one per side, rather than one slab, which changes what sits next to the chip.
- The hinge uses more than 100 components with custom adhesives for flex relief, and its cover is 3D-printed from 100 percent recycled titanium.
- Both displays can run at once, and keynote coverage described a custom display engine driving them together. Apple’s tech specs do not list that engine separately.
- Closed, the two halves fold face to face at 11.3 mm. Apple has not said whether sustained performance differs open or closed.
What it changes when the phone is in your hand
The cases where cooling shows up are the long ones, and Apple’s own spec sheet is a good guide to what the Duo is expected to hold up under.

None of those figures is a temperature. They are the workloads that would previously have been the first to throttle in a body this thin, and the 35 percent sustained-performance claim is Apple’s way of saying they should not. What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a surface temperature, a throttling curve, an operating temperature range for the iPhone Duo, or a sustained-performance comparison against the iPhone 18 Pro rather than the iPhone 17 Pro. It has also not published the Duo’s battery capacity in mAh or its RAM.
iPhone Duo pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability on Friday, October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions and 28 more on October 30. It starts at $1,999 for 256GB, or $83.29 a month over 24 months, and ships with iOS 27.1.
