For most people buying a Mac right now the answer is the Mac mini with M6 at $899, or $799 on Apple’s Education Store. It goes on general sale on Tuesday, September 22, after pre-orders opened on August 25, and it is the one machine where Apple has put its newest-generation chip in its cheapest box.
The catch decides the whole purchase. That $899 buys a computer and nothing else: no display, no keyboard, no mouse. Apple’s own Studio Display is $1,599, which more than doubles the outlay, so the Mac mini wins only if you already have a screen or intend to buy a cheaper one.

Why the M6 mini is the right default
Apple describes the M6 as up to 40 percent faster on CPU than the chip it replaces, with up to 2x faster graphics, up to 4x faster AI performance and up to 2x faster storage than M4. Its more specific figures are up to 13.5x faster large language model prompt processing than M1 and 4.8x faster than M4, up to 2.3x faster spreadsheet calculations than M1 and 1.5x faster than M4, and up to 2x faster gaming performance with ray tracing than M4.

Read those as Apple’s own generational comparisons, not test results. It publishes no application, duration or configuration alongside them, so none is a benchmark. What they establish is direction: the cheapest new Mac desktop carries the newest chip. The 16GB starting memory is the figure to watch, because unified memory cannot be changed later, and 32GB is the only headroom Apple offers here.
The catch in each option
- Mac mini with M6, $899. Memory starts at 16GB and stops at 32GB, the ports are Thunderbolt 4 rather than Thunderbolt 5, and the price includes no display, keyboard or mouse.
- Mac mini with M5 Pro, $1,699. Nearly twice the money for a previous-generation chip family. Apple is selling M6 in the cheaper mini and M5 Pro in the dearer one, the opposite of the usual order.
- Mac Studio with M5 Max, $2,499. Worth it only if the 128GB memory ceiling or the display count is the thing you are buying.
- Mac Studio with M5 Ultra, $5,499. The 512GB unified memory configuration does not ship until late October 2026, so the halo specification is a month behind the machine.
- Every Mac. macOS 27 is the final release to support Rosetta, so an Intel-only app you depend on has one operating system cycle left.

The M5 Pro mini is the step for 64GB of memory or Thunderbolt 5, and Apple puts it at up to 8.5x faster large language model prompt processing than M2 Pro. Mac Studio with M5 Max is the step for display work, because Apple says it drives up to eight displays, or four Studio Display XDR panels at 5K and 120Hz. M5 Ultra is for people who already know why: up to 33 streams of 8K ProRes 422 at 30 frames per second, and a media engine with twice the encode and decode blocks of M5 Max. Apple also says four clustered Mac Studio systems deliver 3x faster AI inference than one.
Both machines were announced in August rather than at the September keynote covered in our event recap, which is part of why they have gone largely unremarked. The Neural Accelerator language Apple uses for the M6 graphics cores is the same idea it applies to its iPhone silicon, explained in our A20 Pro explainer.
The Rosetta deadline that belongs in this decision
Apple told developers on September 1 that macOS 27 is the final release to support Rosetta, the translation layer that lets Intel-only software run on Apple silicon. From macOS 28 the company says Rosetta will be available only for “certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks”. In macOS 26.4 or later some users already see a system notification when they launch an app that relies on it.
macOS 27 Golden Gate arrives free on Monday, September 14, the same day as iOS 27, and Apple’s compatibility list runs from MacBook Neo and Apple silicon MacBook Air and MacBook Pro of 2020 or later through to Mac Pro with Apple silicon. No Intel Mac appears on it. If you are replacing an Intel machine, the software question is now more urgent than the hardware one.
What has not been confirmed
Apple has not published test conditions for a single one of the M6, M5 Pro, M5 Max or M5 Ultra figures above. It has not given a specific date in late October for the 512GB Mac Studio configuration, nor said whether that configuration can be ordered before it ships. Per-device AppleCare+ prices for this generation are not published. Apple’s macOS 27 and Apple Intelligence device lists both name a MacBook Neo with an A18 Pro chip, and no price, configuration or ship date for it appears in the material behind this guide.
