Does anyone know what is wrong with powerpoint html pages?  they ONLY work in internet explorer.  I was looking at web pages generated from a powerpoint presentation and they don’t render AT ALL in Netscape 4.5, Mozilla 1.0, Omniweb 4.1… but they work perfectly in Internet Explorer.  Is there a piece of code that could be removed that would make them work in other browsers?  Is it a lost cause?

sorry, I’m just really P.O.ed at MS right now.

I had your same frustration a while ago. I said almost the same exact thing about what I wanted to do to M$...icon_lol.gif

Alas, my problem was reversed. Mine would not show up right in IE, while it showed up right in everything else.

It may sound simple, but definately make sure you have curly quotes shut off. That can mess stuff up like you would not believe.

Which version of Office/PP are you using?

Yeah, I do. They’re generated with Power Point!

Seriously, Using Power Point, or Word for that matter, to generate HTML is kinda like using a hammer to remove a screw. It’ll probably work, but you’d get a much better result with the right tool.

You could run the pages through MacTidy . It’ll clean up sloppy syntax, and explain why it was wrong.

hmm, I’ll look into mactidy.  It may be a little awkward because I don’t have the original powerpoint (I think they were created in the latest windows version) maybe if I download the pages, tidy them up and then view them… crap.  curly quotes eh?

I guess I was hoping there was something very specific that other browsers didn’t like that I could change and then view them.  oh well I guess this is no surprise.

*cringes at the thought of creating HTML from any MS Office app*

Anyway, running the page through the W3C ‘s HTML validator should give you a long list of errors that need a-fixin’. icon_smile.gif

but hasn’t it been proven to be humanly impossible to fix all of the errors that those will give you with MS generated html?

might as well write the entire page from scratch.  icon_razz.gif

Well, yes, but at least it’d be easier to find that big, fat, glaring error that kills all the browsers except for (surprise!) IE. icon_smile.gif

EDGar,

Can you post the URL of the presentation so I can take a look at it? I might just be able to fix it and tell you what’s wrong with it at the same time. icon_smile.gif

Hey, EDGar! I just found this script, Word HTML Cleaner , at Textism.com (a very fine weblog). You might give it a shot.

hey cool!  I’ve pretty much given up on this problem for now. but that is a great resource to know about.

I suspect it wouldn’t work as well for powerpoint.  MS puts a TON of javascript in powerpoint html to make them dynamically resize and all sorts of weird things.  worth checking out though.
