Did Steve (Balmer) out do Steve (Jobs)?!? Zero buttons. Looks nice, but no chance I’m getting one.

Tan might think it is a iPod killer however.

Are those screws to access the removable battery?

Hmmm,
No video icon, marketplace cut off, more cut off, too much real estate at the top of the screen. It’s hard to believe this is real. And screws? Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.

Spec given in the present tense, except for a subliminal uncorrected slip:
“Zune HD will include a full-screen Internet browser optimized for multitouch functionality”
Actually, I’m not convinced MS actually expects to sell any. I think it’s just a test platform copied from the 2-year old iPod Touch so that they can try to develop Windows Mobile 7’s internet features and touch UI up to a level that might persuade handset makers to consider building a device. And this announcement is just a PR stunt on the back of that development necessity.
And - what a con - it’s just HD radio. HD (720) video playback is only via special premium docking station. i.e. the “Zune HD” can’t play HD video any more than a USB stick can. (Actually my USB memory sticks do play HD video when interfaced via a “purpose built premium dock”).

The most interesting thing about this is the OLED screen. Have they dropped sufficiently in price to make the inclusion of one not jack the price up to much, or cause MS to make a loss on each device?

It’s still a dog with fleas, just a few less fleas (for the OLED screen).

Taking it apart will provide the real entertainment value.

I’m surprised MS went with philip screws…slotted screws are more their “style”

Pedantically they look more like torq screws to me - like in the original Mac.

Unfortunately, MS doesn’t *care* if they take a loss on each device. Their motivation is WINNING the battle against the iPod. I wouldn’t put ANYTHING past them.
The back, in particular definitely looks like something MS would develop. I think they really TRY to make things look “geeky” as opposed to “stylish”.

Full color OLED screens are appearing in iPod/iPhone sizes, and will likely be on the next iPhone, presumably because of reduced power consumption. For example Sony’s iPod touch clone has an OLED screen. (edit: shipping mid-June apparently)
No surprise that MS can source a few thousand for Zune HD in 6 months time.

Even more pedantically, they look to me not like Phillips, nor Torx, but Tri-Wing :-D
