iPhone was synced to iMac that died :(

My iPhone was synced with my iMac. Unfortunately before Christmas my hard drive on my iMac failed (power supply went, taking the hard drive with it, which in turn took out the logic board, and has recently been discovered that something else went on it as well because the iMac is back at the repairman’s because it died 7 hours again after I got it home!)

I have been told that my iPhone can only be syned to one computer. I found this out when I tried to download and install and app on my iPhone from my Mom’s iMac. It wanted to erase my phone and install her library - which only contained the one app I just purchased and downloaded through iTunes using my iTunes account.

When I got my iMac back, I tried to sync it (before the iMac died again) and it said the same thing. That my iPhone can only be synced to one computer and wanted to erase my phone and sync with the empty library on my newly rebuilt iMac.

How am I suppose to sync my iPhone to my iMac (when I get it back again) in order to back up my phone, install new apps, and manage my music?

If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it!

I’m not willing to lose everything on my phone to just be able to sync it and start over.

Thanks if anyone has a helpful suggestion!

OliveButterfly:

I did a quick Google search on the topic and a number of recommendations came up. Other members who have faced this challenge may be able to provide the best advice.

I do suggest investing in an external hard drive for Time Machine backups. When a member of our household lost a hard drive that was replaced under AppleCare, restoring data from the Time Machine backup was nearly effortless. It saved an investment of several hundred dollars in iTunes content and thus paid for itself a few times over in one incident.

Probably solved this by now but you can move your apps and backup to the new computer without problem.  The new hard drive is treated as a new computer so you need to reauthorize your itunes account and then it will ask if you want to transfer your iphone data to itunes.  Itunes will transfer your existing data to the new hard drive without losing the data.
