Photoshop in 32-bit mode crashes

  Does anyone know why my Photoshop CS5 in 32-bit mode loads and then crashes—It disappears and I am
  left my Desktop screen.  I need 32-bit to scan and use some nik software.

  0. for safety’s sake, prior to the selections below, make a backup of your Home / Library folder.

  Suggestions in no particular order:

  
  1. repair disk permissions.  If you’re familiar with Yasu or Cocktail, use those to run some maintenance stuff.  Note: do not clear cookies.
  2. use a 2nd user account
  3. reinstall the latest combo update
