Last Seen has not fully revealed what happened to Maggie Ridley, but the first two episodes establish a trail connecting her disappearance with teenager Sarah Reid. Maggie vanished 11 years before the present-day story, and her father Ian never accepted that she was gone forever.
Ian’s life changes when he receives a distress call from a teenage girl he believes is Maggie. Episode 2 adds memories and physical clues that support his theory, while withholding the proof needed to confirm Sarah’s identity or explain the missing years.

The first clue is the call itself. Apple’s official synopsis says former detective Ian, now working as a police dispatcher, receives a distress call from a teenager he is certain is his daughter. Our Episode 1 recap explains how that moment reopens the case.
The second group of clues comes from Sarah. Published Episode 2 reporting says she finds a fragment of a flyer connected to Maggie and remembers carving “Mags” into a log. Ian used that nickname for his daughter, giving the memory personal significance that an ordinary stranger would be unlikely to know.
Sarah’s current family is another part of the puzzle. Apple identifies Cowell’s character as Henry Reid, Peake’s as Jenna Reid and Lourdes’ as Sarah Reid. The official material does not explain how Sarah entered their family or state that either parent kidnapped Maggie. Our character guide provides the confirmed relationships.
What remains unanswered
The show has not confirmed that Sarah is Maggie through DNA or another independent record. It has also not identified the kidnapper, explained the motive or accounted for the entire 11-year gap. Ian’s theory is compelling, but the evidence remains incomplete after Episode 2.
It is also unclear how much Sarah remembers on her own and how much of her past may have been shaped by the adults around her. A childhood nickname is meaningful evidence, yet it cannot explain who took Maggie, where she lived afterward or why the truth remained hidden for more than a decade.
The series is adapted from The Dispatcher, but Apple has changed names, chronology and location. Those differences mean the novel cannot be used as automatic confirmation of the television answer.
Episode 3, “The Lie,” arrives September 16. Apple says a closer examination of the call will turn Ian’s world inside out, placing the reliability of the original clue under new pressure. Our Episode 2 ending analysis examines why Ian believes Sarah is Maggie without treating the mystery as settled.
