Apple Watch SE 3 on watchOS 27: What Apple’s $249 Watch Gains Tomorrow, and What It Was Already Missing

Apple Watch SE 3 receives watchOS 27 for free on Monday, September 14, 2026, the same day as every other current Apple Watch. Because SE 3 already shipped a year ago without an ECG sensor or a blood oxygen sensor, most of what separates it from Series 12 tomorrow was already true before the update arrived, not because of it.

That is worth separating out clearly, because it is easy to blame a software update for gaps that were built into the hardware from the day SE 3 launched.

What SE 3 gets for free tomorrow

FeatureReaches SE 3?
Siri-suggested app grid and Smart Stack tap gestureYes
Cycle Tracking perimenopause and menopause notificationsYes, using the watch’s temperature sensor and software; Apple’s wording says the feature should not be used for birth control or to diagnose a health condition
Workout Buddy without a nearby iPhoneYes
Consolidated Find My appApple’s own wording ties this to Series 9 and later plus Ultra 2 and later, and does not separately name any SE model, so this is not confirmed for SE 3
Health Sensing System, Readiness, Audio Intelligence, new Steps complicationNo, all tied to the S11 chip in Series 12 and Ultra 4

What SE 3 was already missing before this update

SE 3 launched in September 2025 without an ECG app and without a blood oxygen sensor, the same two omissions every SE model has carried. Apple’s own specification pages show the second-generation SE, from 2022, listed the identical gap: no ECG, no blood oxygen. watchOS 27 does not add either sensor, and it does not remove anything SE 3 had. The watch’s position relative to Series 12 on those two features has not moved since before the keynote, and it will not move on September 14 either, because sensors are hardware and this update is software.

What SE 3 costs next to Series 12 and Ultra 4

ModelStarting priceChip
Apple Watch SE 3$249S10
Apple Watch Series 12$399S11
Apple Watch Ultra 4$799S11

Apple has not published titanium, ceramic or cellular prices for Series 12, so the $399 figure is the aluminum starting point, not a full comparison across every finish. What the table does show plainly is that the S11 chip, and everything gated to it, starts $150 above SE 3’s price, not zero.

Apple’s own Health app materials describe the Vitals app as being for wellness, not medical use, and Apple attaches the same kind of language to Cycle Tracking’s perimenopause notifications. Either way, anyone reading a heart rate trend or a Cycle Tracking notification on an SE 3 tomorrow is looking at wellness information under Apple’s own framing, not a diagnosis, and that framing does not change with a more expensive watch.

What Apple has not said

SE 3 needs the same paired-iPhone condition as every other watch on the list: an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), already running iOS 27, per Apple’s watchOS page checked today, and Apple does not relax that requirement for its least expensive current watch. Beyond that requirement, several details remain unpublished.

  • Whether the consolidated Find My app actually reaches SE 3. Apple names Series 9 and later and Ultra 2 and later; it does not separately list SE 3 either way.
  • Whether a future SE model will ever carry the Health Sensing System.
  • A stated release time for the update on September 14.
