Apple says its game controller support is adding the Sony Access Controller across iPhone, iPad and Mac. The May 19, 2026 accessibility release describes a configurable thumbstick, nine buttons, up to four external buttons, and the option to pair two controllers at once. Apple has given it no date beyond “later in 2026.”

Apple’s release does not describe the hardware itself beyond the button and thumbstick counts it lists, and it does not say whether Sony or Apple is responsible for the work that makes the pairing possible. It credits the addition to iOS, iPadOS and macOS as platforms, without further detail on the controller’s manufacturing or sale.

What Apple says the controller adds

Apple’s release lists a configurable thumbstick and nine buttons built into the controller, plus support for up to four additional external buttons that can be wired in separately. It also lists the option to pair two Access Controllers to a single iPhone, iPad or Mac at the same time. Apple’s release does not explain why someone would pair two controllers rather than one, only that the option will exist.

Apple does not say in this release whether the controller connects over Bluetooth, a wired connection, or both, a detail it does publish for other items in the same accessibility update, such as Vision Pro’s Wheelchair Control. It also does not name a specific games app, title or App Store category that has been tested with the controller, and it does not break down which of the nine built-in buttons map to which in-game actions, or say whether that mapping is fixed by Apple’s framework or left to each app’s developer.

Which platforms are named, and which are absent

Apple names iOS, iPadOS and macOS for Sony Access Controller support. Apple TV and Apple Watch do not appear in the list Apple published for this item, and visionOS is also absent, unlike the hearing aid pairing update announced the same day, which does name visionOS. Apple has not said whether controller support will extend to any of those platforms later.

Where this sits in Apple’s accessibility update

Sony Access Controller support appears in the same May 19 release as hearing aid pairing improvements, a new FaceTime interpretation feature and updates to VoiceOver and Magnifier. Apple grouped all of it under one accessibility announcement rather than issuing it as a standalone game controller update, which is why it sits alongside features aimed at very different groups of users rather than in Apple’s usual gaming or App Store communications. That leaves the controller’s arrival looking like a platform-support story rather than a settings story so far: Apple is confirming that iOS, iPadOS and macOS will recognize the hardware, without yet publishing how a person configures it once connected, or whether configuration happens inside Apple’s own settings or through the controller itself.

What Apple has not said

Apple has not published a price, a connection method, or a list of compatible games for Sony Access Controller support. It has not set a date narrower than “later in 2026,” has not said whether Apple TV or Apple Watch will gain support later, and has not stated a minimum OS version beyond the 27-series releases arriving this fall. Apple’s release makes no claim about which games or apps are suited to any individual, and this article makes none either.

As of September 12, 2026, Apple’s May 19 newsroom post remains the only public description of this feature. It arrives in a week built around iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders, AirPods 5 and Apple Watch Series 12, all covered in Apple’s September 9 event recap, with iOS 27 due Monday, September 14. Apple has not said when it will next update the public on Sony Access Controller support.
